Adventures Among the Waterfalls
Ola I ka wai a ka opua - a Hawaiian proverb that tells us "rain gives life." It is this rain that also gives us the resplendent countryside as well as the plentiful waterfalls found in North Kohala at the north end of the Big Island of Hawaii. This rain has also shaped the dramatic landscape of valleys, streams and cliffs found there. With exclusive access and permits, we offer a very special waterfall adventure tour in the heart of Kohala.

Volcanoes in the Sea Adventures
The geologic creation of the Hawaiian chain, a timeless battle between the elemental forces of fire and water, is one of the world's greatest natural history stories. There's not a better place on earth to witness and understand the awesome nature of volcanoes and there's not a better way to explore Hawaii's volcanoes than in the company of one of our Interpretive Naturalists.

Adventures into Native Hawaii
Hawaii's birdlife is among the most interesting on the planet with many of the unusual species here classified as either endangered or threatened. Because of the encroachments of urban areas and "civilization," many native species are now found in rainforest, montane forest, dryland and other environments which are not always easily accessible to the average visitor or those unfamiliar with Hawaii's terrain. Also, Hawaii has little mammal wildlife, so birds really offer the visitor one of the only opportunities to observe endemic species - other than aquatic varieties - in a natural environment.

Hawaii Forest & Trail offers two bird watching adventures which are for more serious/experienced birders as well as those who have heretofore had little interest in avian wildlife. There is a simple reason for this: Though the birds are certainly great to see, just visiting the extraordinary habitats in which they live - and which few visitors to Hawaii will ever see - is a superb nature adventure in itself.

The naturalist guides who lead Hawaii Forest & Trail's birding adventures are not only highly knowledgeable in the nature aspects (geography, geology, biology, natural history) of these tours, they are equally knowledgeable about Hawaii's birdlife. They make both veteran bird observers as well as the casual nature lover feel right at home.

Merriman's Farm Visits & Dinner
In keeping with its nature focus, in the spring of 2006 Hawaii Forest & Trail began offering its Merriman's Farm Visits and Dinner tour, which it operates in conjunction with Merriman's Restaurant and Hawaii AgVentures. The guided tour takes guests behind the scenes of Hawaii regional cuisine on a visit to a ranch and farm in the Waimea area of the Big Island, followed by a dinner featuring fresh ingredients from the farms. The tour first visits Kahua Ranch at the 3,000-foot elevation in the Kohala Mountains. Kahua Ranch is known for range-fed and organically raised sheep and cattle as well as its scenic views. The tour also visits Honopua Farm, noted for its lavender, organic vegetables and cut flowers. Following the farm visits, the tour returns to award-winning Merriman’s Restaurant in Waimea for a special four-course dinner prepared by chefs using the products and produce from the farms visited.
