Venture into the wonderland of Hawaii's native forests. Home to some of the rarest plants and animals on earth, these habitats are windows into Hawaii's evolutionary past. Pursuing the birds leads you into a Hawaii that few ever experience. Together, Hakalau Forest Wildlife Refuge and Rainforest/Dryforest full day adventures, provide the opportunity to see all of Hawaii Island's remaining forest bird species

Rainforest and Dryforest Birding Adventure Come along as we explore two rare habitats; the cloudmist kipuka rainforest on Mauna Loa and the sub-alpine dry forest of Puu Laau on Mauna Kea. Here are two places that represent Hawaii before human contact; places where plants and birds found nowhere else on earth reveal an evolutionary epic of the islands. Don't miss this rare opportunity to witness Hawaii's native birds and forests.

Hakalau Forest Wildlife Refuge Adventure Hakalau means "many perches." Named by Hawaiians long ago, it is still recognized as critical bird habitat today. Once part of a large cattle ranch, it was the first National Wildlife refuge in the country established for forest birds and it's home to some of the rarest plants, insects, and birds on earth. We access the Pua Akala tract (which is not open to the public) by special permit.
