Maui and the Sun

Posted: Dec 12, 2010

It is said that Maui’s mother, Hina, lived in the cave behind Rainbow Falls. Hina was renowned for her beautiful, handmade kapa cloth. However, there never seemed to be enough sunlight to dry the cloth properly. This saddened Maui, so he asked the sun to slow down, for his mother. At first the sun was willing, but then continued at his previous pace. It is then believed that Maui traveled to the summit of Haleakala, the house of the sun, where he battled the sun and eventually broke some of the sun’s rays, which it used as its legs. Finally, Maui came to an agreement with the sun that he should move slowly half of the year, in order to dry Hina’s kapa cloth, and then speed back up for the other half.
