Nanaue is the man-shark born of Kamohoalii, the shark god, and Kalei, a young woman from the Big Island of Hawaii. Legend has it that Kamohoalii once took the form of a man, to woo a beautiful young woman near Waipio valley. The couple fell in love and had a child, which they named Nanaue. Nanaue was born with a giant shark mouth on his back, which his parents kept covered. Kamohoalii warned never to feed the child meat, then left. Against his father’s warnings, Nanaue was fed meat, which sparked his insatiable shark appetite. He eventually became a man eating menace and was banished from the lands.
