Many places in the island you can find two plants, pohuehue and kaunaoa, growing entangled in each other. Legend has it that these two were actually two lovers at one point in time. Pohuehue and Kaunaoa were the best of friends and deeply in love, however one day they got in an argument. Pohuehue got so mad he sailed away to live on a different island. One morning while thinking of his lost friend, Pohuehue began picking hau blossoms (native yellow hibiscus) and tossing them into the waves. The flowers drifted to the beach where Kaunaoa was, also thinking of here lost lover. Upon seeing the flowers, Kaunaoa followed them across the water and back into Pohuehue’s arms, where the two remained in embrace the rest of their days.
