Due to the newly identified deadly fungus threat (Rapid Ohia Death) to the ʻōhiʻa tree, Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge has temporarily suspended all tour operations in the refuge. Currently, the disease is confined to Hilo and Puna areas of Hawaii island. Hawaii Forest & Trail supports all efforts to control the spread of this disease.
For our bird lovers, please check out our Rainforest and Dryforest Birding Adventure for a comparable birding experience in cloudmist forest on Maunaloa and a sub-alpine dryforest on Maunakea. Hawaii’s much loved Palila Amakihi, Iiwi, Elepaio, Apapane, and our endangered Akiapolaau can be spotted in these forests.
